BIO
Esther Simonis (b. close to Allesverloren, Riebeeck-Wes, South Africa) is a South African fine artist, printmaker, curator, educator, and land‑art practitioner whose career spans more than four decades across South Africa, Australia, and Israel. She holds a Master of Arts in Visual Arts (UNISA), with a research focus on Archaeological Methodology and Art Making: Excavating Parallels, and a BA Fine Arts from the University of South Africa.
Her work has been exhibited widely, including at AVA Gallery Cape Town, Gallery 2 Johannesburg, White River Gallery, Fleurs Gallery Hermanus, Fynarts Festival Hermanus, Morgenson Wine Estate, SA Print Gallery, Thaba Eco, Fried Contemporary, and the Free State Art Festival. She has been a PPC Imaginarium finalist multiple times, participated in national and international print exchanges, and curated exhibitions such as Thaba Art Weekend and Paradigm Shift in Perth, Australia.
Her practice spans printmaking, monotype, sculpture, land art, and environmental installations, including long‑term projects at Thaba Eco Nature Reserve. She has contributed to international print exchanges, published a book (Art on the Rocks), and appeared in Art Market Magazine (Israel).
Her work is rooted in archaeology, ecology, memory, and the South African landscape — particularly geological histories, coastlines of Hermanus and the Western Cape. Today, she continues to create from her studio in Hermanus, where she is represented by Fleurs Gallery and participates in The Printing Girls collective.
