Licensing / Royalties
Licensing (also see the licensing notes on the 'Licensing page')
• A license is the legal agreement that grants someone permission to use intellectual property (like artwork, music, software, or a brand) under specific conditions.
• It sets the rules: who can use it, for how long, in what territory, and for what purpose.
• Example: An artist licenses their design to a clothing company so it can be printed on T‑shirts.
Royalties
• Royalties are the payments made under that license agreement. They’re usually calculated as a percentage of sales, a fixed fee per unit, or sometimes a lump sum.
• They’re the ongoing financial benefit the creator receives in exchange for granting the license.
Prices
